BAXTER'S FENCE FUND

Our old shelter that was originally built in 1968 sits just below the hill of our new and improved facility. We are currently raising money to turn our old building into a home-like environment for our shelter pets to explore. So they can get to know what a "couch" is... or a TV playing loud movies, a ringing telephone & more! Majority of our shelter pets have NEVER  been in a  home or know what any household objects are. We are also clearing trees and recently tore down the old office and making a HUGE fenced in playground! We will have two separate playgrounds, one for the puppies and of course.. the big dogs get their own yard too. Playtime will ALWAYS be supervised and let the dogs feel the grass, play with toys, run around and burn all their built up energy. We hope to have an obstacle course for them to get exercise and have fun while doing so!

CONSTRUCTION OF THE PLAYGROUND CONTINUES ON NOW THAT SPRING IS HERE

BEFORE AND AFTER PHOTOS WILL BE UP SHORTLY!

A letter from Teresa McDowell (board member)

I want to take this opportunity to inform our readers of the progress that has been made in connection with the Baxter’s Fence/Playground Fund.  We have managed to raise over $1600.00 for the fund, with each dollar spent going directly to the improvement/development of an exercise and play area for the canine residents of the Macon County Humane Society.  With the help of Project Challenge, volunteers, board members and staff, the dream of having a secure play/exercise area is becoming a reality. The noticeable changes include removal of an abandoned building in an area which will eventually be included in the playground area and clean up, fertilizing and planting of grass seed in an existing fenced area which will be utilized for the playground in the very near future.

This is a very exciting project for all of us who volunteer to walk dogs at the shelter. We cannot wait until the dogs can play and run unleashed in an area, with smells, shade and grass.  A sincere thanks goes out to everyone who has volunteered their time, labor or funds to make this project happen. A special thanks goes out to Board Member Dianne Whitman for her continued focus on this project, and for her gifts of persuasion in making the rest of us realize this project is a priority.  A special thanks also goes to Charlie Dowdle at Dowdle Feed Store for his contribution and discount of grass seed, fertilizer and hay. You have truly helped make this dream a reality.

We can always use more ideas, help and funding.  If you are interested in helping in any way with the Baxter’s Fence/Playground Fund, please contact the Macon County Humane Society at (828) 524-4588.
